OECD Report Highlights Health Benefits of Adult Learning

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has published a report from the Centre for Educational Research and Innovation which links continued adult learning with reduced risk for neurodegenerative diseases. The report, entitled ‘Understanding the Brain: The Birth of a Learning Science,’ presents a review of recent developments in neuroscience as applied to the process for learning and offers advice on educational choices at every stage of life. The good news for older learners is that continuing involvement in education can help to fend off the neurological symptoms of ageing. This is in contradiction of current policy on life-long learning which considers education only in its economic value, rather than its life-enhancing role.
